Savage in HOT WEATHER

Things are starting to heat up here in Southern California. Yesterday, I go out to the garage to check out my Savage before the morning commute and discover a rear flat tire (third one this year). After calling in to work to tell them I'll be late, I remove the tire and go down to the local shop to have it repaired. By the time I get it all back together and ride to work it's about 95-100 degrees out. The first part of my commute is about 16 miles of city streets before I hit the freeway. About ten miles into the ride, she starts to stutter at mid throttle. If I gave full throttle she would recover and she would idle at stops. As soon as I would accelerate she would sputter and cough until the revs got high enough. I suspect she might have been overheating but what puzzles me is that if she was running too hot, why would I be able to ride her at upper speeds? I pulled over and let her cool off down the road a while and the problem went away. She did the same thing on Monday afternoon on the way home when I got back in stop and go traffic. I still think the Savage has some carb quirks, because so many of you have mentioned similar problems. Any comments on this? Those of you that have experienced this problem, was it during hot weather? Bruce suggested that it is due to carb icing. Can that happen in hot weather? Remember, I have richened the fuel mixture up quite a bit by re-jetting and removing the spacer. This could have affected the mid range carb setting in hot weather. Otherwise I'm happy to report she is running fine at 36K. Keeping my fingers crossed as I'm still making payments on her. Ride safe.
